While coconuts are a preferred host, the beetle also attacks other palm species such as date palms, oil palms, and ornamental palms. This myth has led to a narrow focus on coconut plantations, leaving other vulnerable palms unprotected.


Myth 2: Chemical Pesticides Are the Best Solution


Many early responses relied heavily on chemical pesticides to kill the beetles. However, pesticides have limited effectiveness because the beetles spend much of their life cycle inside tree trunks or in decaying organic matter, where sprays cannot reach. Overuse of chemicals also risks harming beneficial insects and the environment.


Myth 3: Trapping Alone Can Stop the Spread


Trapping beetles using pheromone lures has been a popular control method. While traps help monitor beetle populations and reduce numbers locally, they cannot stop the beetle’s spread on their own. Relying solely on traps without integrated management has led to disappointing results.
