The Basics: What are Coconut Rhinoceros Beetles

Before we dive into the signs of an infestation, let's quickly cover what CRBs are. These beetles are large, dark, and love to burrow into the crowns of palm trees. They munch on the sap, causing damage that can eventually kill the tree if not treated. Knowing what to look for can help you catch an infestation early and save your precious palms.

Signs your Palm Tree Might Be Affected by CBR

Here are some telltale signs that your palm tree might be playing host to these unwanted guests:

  1. One of the most obvious signs of CRB damage is holes in the palm fronds. These beetles bore into the base of the fronds, leaving behind round holes as they chew their way through the tree. If you notice holes in your palm fronds, it’s time to take a closer look.

  2. V-Shaped Cuts: As the beetles chew on the fronds, they often create V-shaped cuts. These cuts can be seen on the edges of the fronds and are a clear indicator of CRB activity. If you spot these distinct cuts, it's a sign that the beetles are feeding on your tree.

  3. CRBs can cause significant damage to the fronds, making them look ragged and unhealthy. If your palm tree's fronds are starting to look worse for wear, it could be a sign of beetle infestation. Keep an eye out for fronds that appear chewed or have large, irregular holes.

  4. Crown Damage: The crown, or top part of the palm tree where new fronds emerge, is a favorite spot for CRBs. If you notice damage to the crown, such as missing or damaged fronds, it could be a sign that beetles are present. A healthy palm tree should have a full, vibrant crown, so any noticeable damage is a red flag.

  5. Beetle Sightings: This one might seem obvious, but if you see CRBs around your palm trees, there's a good chance they've set up shop in your yard. These beetles are large and easy to spot, especially during their active times at night. If you see them around your trees, it's time to act.
